Glasgow Is to Receive POUND24m of Government Investment to Become "a City of The Future"

Glasgow is to receive £24m of government investment to become "a city of the future".

Glasgow is to host the Technology Strategy Board’s ‘Future Cities Demonstrator’ for showing the impact technology can have on health, transport, energy services to improve the local economy and increase the quality of life.

UK companies will have the opportunity to test systems for smart lighting, energy-efficient buildings and wireless comms.

Government to Create GBP 24m City of Future in Glasgow_1“This £24m investment will make Glasgow a city of tomorrow, demonstrating how cities can work more efficiently with a reduced environmental impact," said Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts.

The demonstrator will be made up of a series of projects that will improve transport and mobility across the city.

It will develop programmes to promote healthy living, deliver advanced street lighting to address community safety and perception of crime, and enhance building energy efficiency  .Government to Create GBP 24m City of Future in Glasgow_2

“From transport systems to energy use and health, this demonstrator will play a key part in the government’s industrial strategy and give real insight into how our cities can be shaped in the future,” said Willetts.

The demonstrator will show how technology can be used to improve local services including improved crime prevention, a reduction in anti-social behaviour and improvements in travel infrastructure.

Glasgow was selected from a shortlist that also included Bristol, London and Peterborough.
