The Taiwan Government Plans to Increase 2012 Energy-Saving Subsidies

Taiwan government to extend subsidies for procuring LED light bulbs Siu Han,Taipei;Jackie Chang,DIGITIMES[Friday 28 September 2012]The Taiwan government plans to increase 2012 energy-saving subsidies from the original NT$700 million(US$23 million)to NT$1.4 billion, according to Yen-Shiang Shih,Minister of Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs. Some of the subsidies will be provided for consumers to procure LED light bulbs, said Shih, and a detailed plan will be introduced in one month.

Due to the electricity price hike,Taiwan's LED lighting market has been heating up in 2012 with significantly growth of LED light bulb sales.

Taiwan-based LED firms are optimistic about the extension of the subsidy.According to LED packaging house Everlight, the government's support for households to switch to LED lighting will effectively help the commercialization of LED lighting.

Despite the fact that the price of LED light bulbs has been falling around the world,LED firms have faced increasing difficulty entering mature markets such as the US and Europe. This is because various governments have been reducing budgets and the number of LED lighting projects due to the debt crisis in Europe.

Many LED firms in Taiwan and China have been shifting focus to emerging markets such as Southeast Asia and Africa.According to studies, the forecast 2012 lighting output in Thailand is around US$250 million with an LED penetration rate of around 10%.The government in Thailand has been eager to adopt LED projects, hence LED lighting penetration is expected to reach above 45%in 2015,said the studies.
