Toy Industries of Europe (TIE) fully agrees with the European Child Safety Alliance's advice to help prevent injuries when playing with toys. Parents should bear in mind the following tips to avoid needless accidents:

  • choose toys that are suitable for the child's age and skill level
  • carefully read and follow all warnings and instructions
  • not give toys with small detachable parts to children under three years of age
  • keep an eye on children as they play to make sure that all toys are played with as intended
  • check toys from time to time and remove broken toys
  • teach children to put away their toys to avoid accidents

Catherine Van Reeth, Director General of TIE, said: 'This is the perfect time of year to remind parents to always buy reputable brands from trustworthy shops and online outlets, to pay attention to all warnings and instructions, and to choose toys that are suitable for the child's age and abilities. Play is a fundamental part of children's lives and together we can ensure a safe play environment.'
