The sports hall of one of the north of England's most prestigious independent schools - Abbey Gate College in Cheshire - has been transformed with the use of LED lighting.
Staff at the school believe that the ceiling spotlights have given an improved hall environment and provided a much brighter atmosphere which has helped with both sport and during examination periods.
In total, 16 SON 250W sodium lamps and 32 145W 774-series Bay Range three-way floodlights were used. Following the installation, light levels across the hall improved considerably and are now much more even.
Measured brightness was around 200 lux at one metre from the wall with the old lighting, whiles it is now 350 lux, which represents a 75 per cent improvement
In the centre of the hall, the illumination levels have increased by just over 20 per cent to 450 lux.
In addition to the improvement in the quality of light, the new bulbs have offered cost savings in several areas.
Indeed, the previous sodium lights used to take around 20 minutes to warm up so were normally left on all day but LEDs illuminate fairly quickly so they can be switched on and off at will.
Commenting on the installation of the LED lights at Abbey Gate College, business manager Andrew Bache said the real appeal of lights for the school was the convenience and improvement in environment.
He continued by stating: "Though the sodium lights were adequate for football and gymnastics, the hall is also used for examinations and social events.
"We were able to dramatically increase the light level in the hall, ensuring the corners as well as the central area is brightly lit. The LED lights are much whiter and very much more even, since the output of the sodium lamps degrades noticeably as they age."
An LED handrail was recently installed in the Divinity School in St John's College at the University of Cambridge.
