Freestreet LED Lighting System for Urban Spaces From Philips Design Was First Exhibited

Although most people don't think too much about the who, how and what about street lighting other than they can see, street lighting design is on the move. There is much more than meets the eye when it comes to design, including energy consumption and the space that street lights illuminate.

The 'Freestreet' highwire LED lighting system for urban spaces from Philips Design was first exhibited at the 2011 Dutch Design Week. Eliminating the need for poles, the 'Freestreet' uses narrow cables that are strung from one placement area to the next. Equipped with energy efficient long lasting LEDs made for illuminating urban spaces, this innovative design comes from architects and urban planners working to solve growing problems of light pollution, inefficient lighting sources and pole cluttered streets.

The seamless urban design of the 'Freestreet'  adds no additional street clutter, instead the electrical and mechanical components are integrated into the framework behind the LEDs and into the cables themselves. The evening hours bring a focused street light design that ensures that the LEDs face downwards, helping to reduce against unnecessary light pollution at night. All of which is part of the Dark Sky Compliant initiative.
