Broadcom Introduced New System on a Chip Devices

The new devices delivers an additional 70% reduction in power consumption while networks are active and up to 95% during downtime

Semiconductor company Broadcom has introduced new System on a Chip (SoC) devices which can deliver the potential of 5G WiFi with high-bandwidth Gigabit connectivity to the home and SMB network.

Broadcom's new SoC devices include: the StrataGX series for SMB routers and network attached storage (NAS) devices and the BCM4708x series for home routers and gateways.

StrataGX and BCM4708x combines a high performance processor, Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch, GbE physical layer transceivers (PHYs), USB 3.0 and traffic accelerators all on a single chip.

The new devices offer a complete end-to-end application to enable stand-alone platforms to achieve the Gigabit wireless rates that 5G WiFi can deliver.

Deployment of the devices will allow multiple users in the home or office to simultaneously stream video content and high bandwidth application downloads 10 times faster without the buffering and interruptions associated with current networks, the company said.

The new devices also feature Broadcom's Energy Efficient Ethernet, delivering an additional 70% reduction in power consumption while networks are active and up to 95% reduction during downtime, minimising two-thirds of energy consumption.

5G WiFi addresses the increased reliance challenges on wireless networks, enabling mobile device users to stream digital content between devices faster and simultaneously connect more wireless devices to home and enterprise networks, while conserving battery power.

The new releases includes integrated GbE PHY/switch and regulators that enable scalable application for multiple GbE router platforms and USB 3.0 delivers up to 10x the transfer speed of USB 2.0 for high-speed storage. It also deliver 5x processing horsepower with increased CPU headroom.
