The sales of semiconductor devices which include discrete, modules and ICs, used in the power electronics industry are expected to reach $20bn in 2012, according to a new report.

Yole Development's two new reports, which include Status of the Power Electronics Industry and Power Fabs Database 2012, revealed that the conversion and motion between the power electronics industry has increased the demand for lighter/smaller, cheaper and more efficient systems.

According to the report, four technologies are well suited to serve the new system requirement which include devices built with silicon IGBT, Super Junction (SJ) MOSFETs, Gllium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC).

By the end of 2012, the market for IGBTs is expected to reach $1.6bn in the medium to high voltage sector, while SJ MOSFETs will account for $567m.

The global market revenue for SiC-based semiconductor devices is expected to account for about 1% of the total semiconductor device market, with SiC sector projected to rise 37% per year to reach $5.34bn by the end of 2020.

The report also revealed that power electronics is expected to be one of the most attractive branches of the semiconductor industry over the next ten years.
