Ball to Cease Food Can Production at Springdale Facility in US

Sustainable packaging solutions provider Ball has announced plans to stop the production of food cans at its packaging facility in Arkansas, US.

The company intends to cease food can production at its tinplate food and aerosol packaging manufacturing plant in Springdale during the fourth quarter of this year.

Springdale facility will continue to manufacture and assemble aerosol cans, cut and coat flat sheet steel. It

The facility also produces components for other Ball food and aerosol facilities.

Ball food and aerosol packaging chief operating officer Jim Peterson said: "Given the overall decline in food can demand, our Springdale food can operations are no longer sustainable and we are electing to focus our remaining local plant resources on our growing aerosol business.

"We will continue maximizing value in our food business and accelerating profitable growth in our global aerosol business."

In August, Ball announced plans to shut down three beverage packaging facilities in the US.

Ball will close operations at its beverage packaging plants located in Birmingham of Alabama, Chatsworth of California and Longview of Texas.

The company also intends to build new and advanced beverage packaging facility in Goodyear, Arizona.

Expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2018, the new facility will produce specialty cans for customers in the southwestern US.

With around 18,450 employees across the globe, Ball provides packaging solutions for beverage, food and household products customers.

The company also offers aerospace and other technologies and services primarily for the US government.
