Responding to complains regarding raw material scarcity by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the textile sector, the Government of Indonesia has decided to halt polyester exports and to develop a raw materials terminal for SMEs.
Ms. Euis Saedah, General Director of SME in the Ministry of Industry, said the need for halting polyester exports aroused as domestic textile producers lack raw materials to support production.
She said soaring prices of raw materials and complementary inputs for fabrics do not allow textile producers to price their products competitively. It has also impacted batik production by SMEs, she added.
According to Ms. Saedeh, Indonesians seeking high quality items still prefer buying imported goods, which also stirs up a need for developing domestic textile accessories industries.
She said the Government's decision to set up a raw materials terminal would aid SMEs to remain competitive against imported goods, and added that the Government would call on investors to invest for setting up the terminal.
Ms. Saedeh said the Government has formulated various policies to ensure easy availability of capital to textile SMEs to help them overcome the problems faced while securing capital and market share.
She informed that the Government has decided to establish microfinance institutions to enable SMEs to avail quicker credit facility.
