The Ostar Headlamp Pro LED from Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH of Regensburg, Germany has been used by Peterson Manufacturing Company of Grandview, MO, USA (a subsidiary of Peterson Corp) in its new 7-inch round automotive headlight, representing Peterson's entry the LED automotive forward lighting market.

Peterson says that the LED provides a compact light source with multichip-on-board technology and silicon casting featuring ceramic chip-level conversion (C^2) and the latest chip technology (UX:3). The firm comments that the LED displays outstanding brightness and luminance due to pure surface emission and low thermal resistance (Rth) for thermal stability, as well as improved corrosion resistance.
As a high-end, high-power light source, the Ostar Headlamp Pro achieves the same output as a halogen lamp. Available in 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-chip versions, the compact multichip LED produces sufficient light from a small footprint (20mm x 20mm) that can be used for high-beam applications. With luminance of 40x106cd/m2 and a radiating surface of 5.5mm, the 5-chip version is suitable for automotive exterior lighting. Other benefits of the LED include a uniform light pattern, a long lifetime, and a scalable chip arrangement, allowing precise configuration to specific application requirements.

Peterson says that its new 7-inch round aftermarket LED headlight features two Ostar Headlamp Pro LEDs per headlamp (one for low beam, one for high beam). The firm found the LED light sources to be much more efficient than halogen lights, drawing only 0.7-1.9A. A color temperature range of 5400-6300K closely simulates the natural daylight. The solid-state dual-volt design is compatible with all 12V and 24V vehicles.
At the beginning of Peterson's development process, project Osram partner provided technical support and collaborated with the firm on developing a concept design (including optics support and computer-simulated thermal analyses) via its application engineering services. "Peterson's 7-inch round headlamp is an excellent example of collaborative development with the latest LED technology enhanced with US innovative application engineering support," comments Mike Godwin, director of Visible LED NAFTA at Osram Opto.
