Representatives Urged The Central Government to Provide Funds for Upgradation of The Mills

Representatives of three Puducherry-based textile mill workers have urged the Central Government to provide funds for upgradation of the mills, which according to them have huge potential for employment generation and to aid economic growth.   Puducherry, formerly Pondicherry, is located on the eastern coast of India.  

During a recent joint meeting, trade union leaders of Swadeshi Cotton Mills, the AFT Mill and Sri Bharathi Mills moved a resolution and urged the Puducherry government to strongly plead to the Centre for releasing about Rs. 5 billion for upgradation of the mills.   The meeting discussed the problems faced by the three textile mills, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Pondicherry unit Secretary and Convenor of the Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions, VS Abishegam said in a statement.   

He said a delegation of trade unions had tabled a memorandum seeking grant for the textile mills, during a meeting with the Prime Minister in New Delhi last year.   However, both the Central and the state governments are yet to respond, he said and urged the Puducherry government to take necessary steps to ensure upgradation of the textile mills.
