The American Association of Textile Chemical and Colorists has organised a Materials Research Poster Competition. Winning entries in each area, whether submitted by an individual or a team, will be awarded.
First Place: US$1,000
Second Place: US$500
Winners will also receive complimentary student registration for the 2014 AATCC International Conference. If winners worked as a team, all team members will receive complimentary registration.
Competition Guidelines Undergraduate and graduate individuals and student teams may enter. For judging purposes, NO distinction will be made between graduate and undergraduate entries. Students are encouraged to work as individuals or in teams of up to four. Each student or team may participate in only one focus area.
All project submissions must be accompanied by a completed entry form. Participants who are not current AATCC student members, and who submit a complete project, will qualify for a discount on a one-year student membership.
Submissions will be judged on:
• Concept originality
• Research quality
• Clarity
• Results, discussion, and conclusions
A poster template is provided
• Background color and font color may be changed
• Use font and point size indicated in the template
• Include images, diagrams, tables, figures, photographs, or other graphics to clearly convey the research
Posters must include the following elements. The space devoted to presentation of each element may be adjusted as needed.
• Names and affiliations (schools) of all researchers
• Title
• Introduction
• Objectives
• Materials and Methods
• Results and Discussion
• Conclusions and Future Work
• Literature Cited
• Acknowledgments (if applicable)

AATCC announces this competition in the fall of 2012, confident that polymer, material, and engineering faculty will incorporate it as a research project in their fall and spring curricula. Faculty members are encouraged to assist students with the coordination of teams and resources and to act as a liaison with AATCC for this competition.

The research poster should pertain to materials for technical and engineering applications.
Examples:
• Composites
• Aircraft or automotive components
• Industrial and technical fabrics
• Architectural or geo-synthetic materials
• Industrial filters and advanced sporting equipment
• Sports performance fabrics
Medical/Biomedical/Protective Materials and Devices
The research poster should pertain to materials for use in either hazardous or medical environments. Posters submitted under this theme may involve active and/or reactive materials, such as self-detoxifying materials or reactive barrier membranes, which protect the wearer against chemical agents, biological agents, and projectiles/improvised explosive devices.
Examples:
• Chemical/biological protection garments and protection for first responders or soldiers
• Artificial internal body implants such as soft prosthetic devices (e.g., artificial arteries)
• Hard materials for bone replacements
• Externally protective medical gowns and masks
Functional/Smart/Nano-materials/Nanofibers
This poster should focus on the creation of structures that incorporate smart functionality to polymers and fibers. These materials could be used for computing, sensing, monitoring, imaging, and/or broadcasting within the material to attain particular end uses.
Examples:
• Novel energy storage
• Energy harvesting
• Camouflage/electromagnetic management
• Optical materials
• Anti-counterfeit materials
• Conducting polymers
• Wearable electronic garments
• Functional nano-materials and nanofibers
• Integrated materials for multifunctional assemblies
