Exports of Textile and Clothing From Portugal Increased by 1 Percent to &Euro2.1 Billion

Exports of textile and clothing from Portugal increased by 1 percent to €2.1 billion during the first half of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012, according to the data released by Association of Textiles and Clothing Industries of Portugal (ATP).

The exports of textile and clothing to non-European Union (EU) countries showed an increase of 10 percent until June, 2013, oje.pt reported.
 
According to ATP, the exports of textile and apparel from Portugal increased by 17 percent to US, 9 percent to Angola, 19 percent to Switzerland, 32 percent to Tunisia, 28 percent to Morocco and 12 percent to Romania.
 
The exports to EU countries such as the UK increased by 8 percent, Belgium grew by 6 percent and Sweden rose by 11 percent.
 
According to ATP, the largest amount of increase in exports was recorded in the segment of clothing and knitted accessories, which fetched €40,000 more during the first half of 2013 compared to the same period of last year.
 
The exports of other textiles, including home textiles, increased by 11 percent compared to the same period of 2012.
 
Meanwhile, the imports of textiles in the first half grew by 12 percent compared to the same period in 2012. The major suppliers of textiles to Portugal included India, Pakistan, Indonesia and Ireland.
