Several China-based first-tier and second-tier PV makers have been expanding or plan to expand solar cell production capacity in China or overseas, and they are likely to ramp up an additional annual capacity of as much as 15GWp in second-half 2016, according to industry sources.
Such first-tier firms include PV module makers Trina Solar, CSI, Jinko Solar Holdings and JA Solar Holdings as well as poly-Si solar wafer maker GCL-Poly Energy Holdings and mono-Si wafer maker Xi'an LONGi Silicon Materials, the sources said.
But the actual capacity expansion completed in second-half 2016 may be lower than the estimated 15GWp because second-tier makers may not have sufficient funds to implement their plans and international equipment suppliers may not be able to meet demand in such a short time, the sources indicated.
