Solar cell price negotiations in Greater China in gridlock Nuying Huang,Taipei;Jackie Chang,DIGITIMES[Monday 4 June 2012]Solar cell price negotiations are in gridlock, said industry sources.Despite that fact that solar cell makers in Taiwan hope to increase quotes due to the anti-dumping duties on China-made solar cells,Taiwan-produced solar cell prices have increased only slightly to around US$0.50/watt from US$0.46-0.48/watt,while China-made ones remain at US$0.41-0.43/watt.
China-based customers have been complaining about the price increase initiated by Taiwan-based solar cell makers.Nevertheless, due to high possibility of Europe taking on similar investigations against China-based firms, the price increase negotiations have been on-going.
Taiwan-based solar firms have seen OEM orders increasing due to the US anti-dumping duties. Some solar cell makers have been operating at full capacity and needing additional employees to fulfill demand.
For solar cells that have conversion efficiency above 16.8%,prices have been quoted around US$0.50/watt,said industry sources. It has been difficult to obtain solar cells with such quality under the price of US$0.48/watt.However,some solar cell makers believe the price increase was not due to the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations.
