Some Taiwan-based IC suppliers have been ramping their shipments of LED driver ICs to China thanks to the fledging LED lighting industry in the country and growing demand for LED backlight products from China-based smartphone, tablet and consumer electronic product makers, according to industry sources.
Among the IC vendors, Macroblock and On-Bright Electronics are expected to see their revenues grow over 30% sequentially in the second quarter, while fellow companies Richtek Technology and Global Mixed-mode Technology (GMT) are likely to double their shipments of LED driver ICs on quarter, the sources estimated.
The LED lighting industries in China and Taiwan have been growing robustly since the beginning of 2013, with orders for LED driver ICs showing a significant growth in the second quarter, the sources indicated.
Macroblock and On-Bright have ventured into the LED driver IC segment much earlier than fellow companies in Taiwan due to demand from their clients in the LED display and power supply industries, said the sources.
Meanwhile, Richtek and GMT are cooperating with flat panel and LED makers to penetrate into the LED driver IC segment, optimizing on their brand names and production scales, added the sources.
More Taiwan-based IC vendors are expected to join the development of the LED driver IC market given that the LED lighting industry is expected to grow by a CAGR of over 20% in the next few years, commented the sources.
