Intel has launched the new Xeon processor E3-1200 v3 product family based on Haswell microarchitecture.

The new processor family is said to handle various workloads including entry-level servers, data centre graphics, microservers, workstations, storage and network appliances.

Built on the 22-nm manufacturing process, the incorporation of new processor in cloud data centre environments is expected to reduce costs, while increasing media processing abilities for cloud-based media service providers.

According to the chipmaker, Haswell will reduce the size of laptops and two-in-one devices and increase the time between charges, further increasing their appeal.

One version of the new chips features central processing unit (CPU) cores, which used about six watts of scenario design power.

In addition, the chips are equipped with Intel HD Graphics P4700, which can support more HD transcodes concurrently per rack compared to the current discrete graphics solutions that deliver up to 4.64 more transcodes per rack.

The new processor will also support other cloud-based graphics applications including video analytics, such as seeking a particular image on closed circuit TV footage, hosting games on a server and streaming the images as interactive videos to clients including set top boxes, tablets and smartphones and desktop virtualisation.

Intel claims that the new Xeon processors can offer better energy efficiency and lowest TDP at 13 Watts for highly dense environments such as microservers.
