The mattress industry will record a 4% gain in unit shipments this year, while the wholesale value of those shipments will jump by 6.8%.
Those are the predictions of Furniture/Today's Consensus Bedding Forecast, which reflects the views of more than two dozen bedding producers, including virtually every major mattress maker.
The newspaper asked top executives at the companies to share their unit and dollar forecasts for industry performance this year on a confidential basis. Their forecasts were then weighted by the market share and averaged, thus yielding the consensus forecast.
The Furniture/Today forecast is more bullish than the industry forecast issued in October by the International Sleep Products Assn. The ISPA forecast, issued by that group's statistics committee, calls for 2.3% unit growth this year and 6.3% dollar growth.
