An Evanston Student Has Been Charged for Bringing a Toy Gun to School

An Evanston Township High School student has been charged with disorderly conduct after he brought a toy gun to school this week, authorities said.

Adel Mohammed Sobhi, 19, of the 800 block of Mulford Street, was charged Wednesday with the Class C misdemeanor after a student reported to school officials that he possibly had a gun, according to Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott.

Superintendent Eric Witherspoon notified families of ETHS students Wednesday afternoon.

“The student will face appropriate disciplinary action at the school level and criminal charges as determined by law enforcement,” Witherspoon wrote. “While this was not an actual weapon, any report of an alleged weapon at school or on school property is considered serious and will not be tolerated.”

The toy gun was reported to school officials by a student who initially believed the gun to be real, Parrott said. It turned out to be a black plastic toy, with the orange tip painted black as well, he added.

Witherspoon’s letter asked parents and guardians to encourage students to report any suspicious activities to school officials or to use high school and police department anonymous Text-A-Tip message lines, eths.k12.il.us/safety/text.
