Severe Storms in Southern Sweden Over The Weekend Felled One Million m³ of Timber

Severe storms in southern Sweden over the weekend felled around one million m³ of timber, according to initial reports. The damage, equivalent to about one-and-a-half months of timber harvest, is less severe than Hurricane Per in 2007 which had extensive effects on the Swedish forestry and sawmilling sector. "As yet, it is still too early for us to determine how severely the storm has affected our members, but we can confirm that the volume of fallen timber is nowhere near the volume that fell during Storm Per in 2007, " said Håkan Svensson, director of forestry at Södra. The storm which hit southern Sweden on Sunday mainly affected the western parts of Södra's business areas, with entire swathes of fallen trees observed in western areas. More limited storm damage has been found in the inland and eastern parts of southern Sweden, where mainly trees at the edges of clearings, groves and individual seed trees have fallen. 

 The contracting stoppage introduced throughout Södra's business areas on Sunday will remain in force until further notice. Source: ttjonline.com
