LEDs in Professional Displays to Grow at 12.1%

Global consumption of packaged LED chips used in signage/professional displays will rise at an average annual rate of 12.1% from $2bn in 2014 to $3.56n in 2019, forecasts a new study from market research firm ElectroniCast Consultants.

By value, the consumption of dual in-line package (DIP) LEDs is forecast to grow more than 20% annually. However, depending on sign/display-type and region, consumption of surface-mount diode (SMD) LEDs is forecast to shrink as chip-on-board (COB) LEDs and multiple-chip COB (MCOBs) LEDs are set for explosive annual growth at 179.5% over 2014-2019.

"The use of chip-on-board LEDs (COB) and multiple-chip COB LEDs (MCOBs) in signage and display applications is relatively new," notes Stephen Montgomery, director of ElectroniCast's LED market/technology research group. "Typically, COBs are considered the next-generation LED package technology for general lighting applications; however, COBs are (now) finding their way into LED channel letter and panel/box signage, back-lighting units (BLUs) for LCD display screens, as well as R&D efforts and new product introduction in the digital signage/display applications," he adds.
