Wood and Wood Products Exports Are Expected to Reach $20 Million in 2012

According to Nicaraguan authorities, wood and wood products exports are expected to reach US$20 million in 2012, a 14 percent increase compared to 2011 figures. The country exported US$17.5 million in wood and wood products in 2011, mainly to the US and China, representing a 40 percent increase compared to the US$12.5 million obtained in 2010. Moreover, the 2011 figure outweighs the 2006 figure by 94.4 percent. This leap is due to the 49.4 percent growth in volume exported between 2006 and 2011 and prices increased by 13.5 percent. The United States bought 31 percent of the wooden furniture exported, while China purchased 56 percent of the processed lumber in 2011. Nicaragua has 3, 254, 145 hectares of forest, which represents 25 percent of the country’s total area. Additionally, the Northern Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN, for its acronym in Spanish) of Nicaragua has the country’s largest tropical forest area and the highest quality wood for the international market. Additionally, the Nicaraguan Center for Export Procedures (CETREX, for its acronym in Spanish) estimates the country will export a total of approximately US$2.7 billion in 2012, a 15 percent increase when compared to 2011. Nicaragua has become an ideal export platform due to key internal factors, including the country’s economic stability, the search for dialogue and consensus between government, private sector and workers, and safety, which are essential for the development of any nation.
