Front End Fab Equipment Spending Is Expected to Be Flat This Year at $31.7bn

Front end fab equipment spending is expected to be flat this year at $31.7bn , says SEMI, with an increase of 24% next year.

Fab equipment spending for 17nm and below is expected to kick off in 2013 and increase by a factor of 2.4 to about $25bn from 2013 to 2014.

Fab construction spending is now expected to increase by  6.7% to $6bn this year and then fall by 18% next year.
Since the 2008/2009 economic downturn, the industry has been adding capacity more slowly. Capacity is now forecasted to expand by just 2.8 percent for this year, and to improve to 5.4 percent growth in 2014.

Excluding 2009, the years 2012 and 2013 show the lowest growth rate for new capacity over that past ten years.

Dedicated foundries are expected to add 10 to 11% more capacity in 2013 and 2014.

Flash will add 4% new capacity in 2013 and about 10% in 2014.

System LSI capacity will fall from the double digits of previous years to single digits in 2013 and 2014.

Capacity additions and equipment spending are expected to pick up in the second half of 2013.  In 2014, at least 5% in new capacity will be added and fab equipment spending will increase by 24%.
