Textile and Knitwear Manufacturing Units in The South Indian City of Tirupur Closed Units

Textile and knitwear manufacturing units in the South Indian city of Tirupur closed their units for a day on October 3 to protest frequent power cuts.

The bandh was fully successful, according to Mr. Raja M Shanmugham, Managing Director of the Tirupur-based Warsaw International, a manufacturer of knitted menswear, womenswear and kidswear.

Representatives of various textile associations and trade unions submitted a memorandum to the district collector seeking uninterrupted power supply to Tirupur textile and garment units.

As a result of the bandh, the Tirupur Exporters Association Knitwear Park as well as the Tirupur Apparel Park looked deserted.

In Tirupur, there are over 10,000 industrial units, mostly textile and knitwear industries, which employ about 500,000 people directly and another 500,000 people indirectly.
