An Initiative Soared Past Its Crowd-Funding Goal on Kickstarter

The kit lets users create their own customisable videogames with a selection of physical building blocks.

An initiative that allows kids to create their own videogames from physical building blocks has soared past its crowd-funding goal on Kickstarter.

The kit - called Bloxels - lets users build customisable video games via a building board, that can then be played on their iOS, Android or Kindle tablet or smartphone.

Created by Pixel Press, the kit features a selection of blocks that can be arranged on a gameboard to build various components of a videogame, from its layout to hero character.

Users can then take a picture of their creation, which through app technology will then be instantly turned into a videogame.

With eight days still remaining on the crowd-funding site, Kickstarter, Bloxels has already surpassed its goal of $40,000 by over $7,500.

“Bloxels is not just another tech-enabled toy,” read a statement from Robin Rath, co-founder of Pixel Press via the Bloxels Kickstarter page. “It’s a hands-on, brains-on, creativity and technology experience that exercises both sides of your brain.

“By starting the game building process with Bloxels’ coloured blocks, players are challenged to put down their screen and think strategically. Each block has many possibilities, so creating a game layout requires some imagination and calculation. Yet it’s as simple as building with blocks.”

The game concept is aimed at kids’ aged eight and upwards and has already been met with strong consumer response.

The first Bloxels title to be launched will be the B.R.A.V.E. Squad, described as a top-down, dungeon crawler action role play game in which players lead an intergalactic hero from planet to planet to take out an army of baddies.

Further titles for the Bloxels brand will include CityBuilder, MusicMaker, 3DModeler, ArcadeBuilder, ArtAnimator, AdventureBuilder and FireworksBuilder.
