Indian automobile manufacturer Mahindra is planning to introduce its no-frills electric car e20 in London.
This is the first time Mahindra will make its entry into the UK market.
The price of this electric car has been set at £13,000 ($18500), which is cheaper compared to other electric cars available in the market including cars from Tesla Model S or Nissan LEAF. The car offers a maximum range of 75 miles (120 km), which costs about half of Nissan LEAF.
Some believe that one of the main reasons for Mahindra to launch a low cost electric car is to have a bottom up approach in comparison to Tesla, Nissan or BMW's approach of top down approach.
Mahindra electric vehicle business chief executive Arvind Mathew said: "We want to take [electric cars] out of the elitist market and make it more of a run-of-the-mill thing."
"Our product is really designed for city commuting, not for long distance driving.
"Our foray into the UK is purely electric, so it's a big deal for us because as a brand we don't exist. From the Mahindra group perspective, this is a huge deal."
Mahindra is targeting young families who are looking to buy their second car or at those families which want to buy a car for their teens.
At present, the car can only be booked online and it will be delivered to the customer's home directly.
Service and maintenance will also be done at home by a fleet of mobile service vehicles.
After the launch becomes successful in London, the company plans to expand the sale to other cities in the UK including Birmingham, Bristol and Milton Keynes, reported Evening Standard.
Mahindra ventured into electric vehicles by buying Reva in 2010.
