General Motors Started Construction of a New Bi-Level Paint Shop in US

US based automobile manufacturer General Motors has started construction of a new bi-level paint shop at the Fairfax Assembly and Stamping Plant in Kansas, US.

The new paint shop will have a footprint of 450,000sqft and is part of company's $600m investment in the plant, which manufactures the Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Malibu.

Scheduled to be completed in five phases in the next two years, the paint shop will expand the plant's footprint by 15% to 3.7 million square feet.

General Motors plant manager William Kulhanek said: "When complete, our plant will be able to continue to paint cars with a flawless finish while using a lot less energy and resources."

The new paint shop's technology upgrades will include 20% smaller footprint that is claimed to use about 50% less energy per vehicle and reduce Volatile Organic Compound emissions

In addition, the shop will use the Thin Film Technology, Hyper Throw E-COAT and GM-patented Radiant Tub Ovens that are claimed to use 20% less natural gas and 40% less electricity.
