Microchip has released pin and function-compatible digital signal controllers and 16bit microcontrollers, processing at 70Mips.
From the dsPIC33E and PIC24E families, "Microchip is simplifying migration with flash ranging from 32 to 256kbyte and performance from 40 to 70Mips," claimed the firm.
Specialised peripherals are intended for motor-control and sensing.

"The 'E' family of controllers also give you on-board op amps and a 'charge time measurement unit' (CTMU) for on-board temperature sensing or capacitive touch sensing," said Microchip.
The families are code-compatible.
Development tools include:
dsPICDEMTM MCLV-2 dev board for low-voltage motor control.
dsPICDEM MCHV-2 dev board for high-voltage motor control.
