BAE Systems has secured a contract to supply hybrid propulsion system for Nova LFS hybrid electric (HEV) buses in Quebec.
Under the contract, the BAE Systems will deliver 475 units of the HybriDrive Series propulsion system for HEV buses to be used by the Association du transport urbain du Quebec (ATUQ).
ATUQ represents the public transit authorities of Quebec including Montréal, Québec, Lévis, Laval, Longueuil, Gatineau, Trois-Rivières, Saguenay, and Sherbrooke.
The propulsion system removes the mechanical connection between the diesel engine and the wheels, while the engine turns into a generator, and the electricity flows from it supplies power to batteries, to an electric traction motor, and then to the wheels.
BAE Systems' facility in Endicott, New York in the US will develop and manufacture the hybrid propulsion systems.
According to the company, the Nova LFS HEV reduces about 30% of fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, when compared with conventional diesel-powered buses.
Currently, the BAE Systems' HybriDrive Series propulsion is used in about 4,000 buses across the world.
