an Exhibition Featuring an Antique Treasure Trove Is Going on in Jakarta

An exhibition featuring an antique treasure trove of the lesser known Dutch culture influenced Indonesian Batik form, Batik Belanda, is going on in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia.

Titled as Batik Belanda from Time to Time, the event has been organized in collaboration with Jakarta Fashion Week, Museum Tekstil Jakarta, Galeri Batik and the long-time batik collector Ms. Asmoro Damais.

Running till April, 4, 2013, the exhibition includes a range of Batik Belanda fabrics with motifs of European flowers and fairy tale images, manufactured between the periods of 1840 and 1940.

Other than the exhaustive display of old and new batik fabrics and designs, the event also features some translated excerpts from the Harmen C. Veldhuisen written book named ‘Batik Belanda 1840-1940 Dutch Influence in Batik from Java History and Sources’ published in1993.

Batik is an Indonesian traditional resist-dyeing technique that uses wax and colourful dyes to decorate a piece of fabric.

The colourful art of Batik Belanda was predominantly inspired and developed by Dutch ancestry residents who lived in Indonesia during the colonial era.
