General Motors and Chevrolet plan to introduce new bi-fuel versions of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty trucks, and compressed natural gas versions of the 2014 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size passenger vans in 2014.
Silverado HD and Sierra HD 2015 bi-fuel versions will be available in 2500HD and 3500HD pickup models in all cab styles and 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. They are designed to run on gasoline or natural gas.
The new 2015 HD trucks will have 6.0L V-8 engine. Its hardened valves and valve seats enable the vehicle to run on CNG or gasoline. Drivers have an option to shift between fuels.
The new 2014 CNG versions of Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana passenger vans also run on 6.0L V-8 engine but additionally have dedicated CNG fuel systems. Three- or four-tank models are available for cargo vans while passenger van models have a three-tank design.
Production of bi-fuel trucks and CNG vans is scheduled to begin early next year.
GM's tier one supplier will distribute the CNG fuel tanks and complementing fuel systems for these trucks and vans from a secondary location.
