Honda de Mexico (HDM), an arm of American automaker Honda Motor, has commenced the production of the redesigned 2015 Honda Fit at its new $800m automobile plant in Celaya, Guanajuato.
This new plant will enable the company to increase its production to meet the demand for fuel-efficient subcompact models in North America.
The new plant is expected to create 3,200 jobs in the region. Annual production of the facility is expected to reach 200,000 vehicles later in 2014 when it has achieved full production.
The new facility will expand the company's production capacity in North America to approximately 1.92 million units.
Honda Motor president & CEO Takanobu Ito said: "Our new plant in Mexico is based on the Honda Company Principle of maintaining a global viewpoint to supply products of the highest quality, yet at a reasonable price, for worldwide customer satisfaction."
Along with the 2015 Honda Fit, the plant will produce an all-new compact SUV later this year.
Besides this, the company is constructing a new $470m transmission plant at the same site in Celaya.
The new transmission plant is expected to begin production of continuously variable transmissions (CVT) in the second half of 2015. It will generate approximately 1,500 new jobs.
