The Institute Will Focus on Increasing Crop Yields

The University of Saskatchewan is developing a food institute, the Global Institute for Food Security, with an initial investment of about C$50m ($50.66m) in Saskatoon, Canada.

The institute will focus on increasing crop yields. It will evaluate the production process from the farm to the fork, in order to address the demand for increased food supply.

The institute has received C$35m ($35.46m) worth funding from Saskatoon-based PotashCorp and the remaining C$15m ($15.20) was provided by the province. The funding will be spread over a period of seven years, reported the oncampus.macleans.ca.

Saskatoon is a leading exporter of canola, flax, mustard and lentils, and has 41% of the arable land in Canada.
