Continental Tire the Americas (CTA) has inaugurated its new tire manufacturing plant in Sumter, South Carolina.
Tires produced at the new plant will enable the company to meet the demand for its Continental and General brand tires from both aftermarket business and car manufacturers.
The first phase of the plant will have the capacity to produce five million tires per year in 2017. In the second phase, CTA plans to expand production capacity to approximately eight million units per year by 2021.
The company will invest a total of $500m in the Sumter plant, which is expected to create about 1,600 new jobs in the region.
Besides this, the German autoparts maker is also expanding its production capacity in Russia, China and Europe in order to meet the global demand on a long-term basis.
