Uber has signed a deal with Chinese automaker BYD—Build Your Dream—to let Uber drivers rent or lease BYD's e6 vehicles. They move to potentially challenge Telsa Motors Incand other green-vehicle makers.
About 25 BYD cars have been in use since the start of the program a few weeks ago, according to Green Wheels, which expected the total to reach 200 or so by the end of this year.BYD's e6 electric wagon can get up to 186 miles per charge and it's already used by taxi companies in other cities around the world. Uber's test program in Chicago currently has 25 drivers using e6 electric cars.
BYD, which has sold buses and fleet vehicles to various U.S. cities and organizations, sees the country as one of its key overseas markets.
