Mazda Has Ratified an Accord with Italian Carmaker FIAT to Produce Sports Car in Japan

Japanese carmaker Mazda has signed a deal with Italian carmaker Fiat to produce an open-top two-seater sports car for Alfa Romeo brand at Hiroshima plant in Japan from 2015.

The new Alfa Romeo under the agreement that was initially signed on 23 May 2012, will be based on Mazda MX-5 architecture.

Both the companies will however develop two differentiated, distinctly styled, iconic and brand-specific roadsters featuring rear-wheel drive.

Through the agreement Mazda expects to increase the development and production efficiency, while Fiat expects to use the technology of its partner while both the cars will sport proprietary engines from each company.

Both the cars developed under the deal will be open-top two-seater sports cars that will feature rear-wheel drive option with variations in engines.

The car was launched in Japan on 9 December 2008 that was powered by 2L DOHC engine, with features including full floating piston pins and revised valve springs.
