Bombardier Signed a Contract with Construction Contractor Al Jaber LEGT Engineering

Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation has signed a contract with construction contractor Al Jaber LEGT Engineering and Contracting LCC to design and build an INNOVIA APM 300 automated people mover system for the Dubai International Airport. The transit system will connect the existing Terminal 1 to the new Concourse 4. The contract is valued at approximately 392 million AED USD 107 million.

The Dubai International Airport is undergoing a massive expansion program which will boost its capacity from 60 million to 90 million passengers per year by 2018. Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects awarded local construction contractor ALEC the contract to build the new Concourse 4 in February 2012 with a build program of 28 months. Bombardier is a sub contractor to ALEC and it will lead the project to design and supply all of the system wide electrical and mechanical elements of the 1.5 kilometers elevated APM system in 24 month delivery program.

Bombardier’s scope includes 18 INNOVIA APM 300 cars with BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 communications-based train control technology for driverless operation. Bombardier will also provide project management, systems engineering and integration, testing and commissioning. Much of the technology will be supplied from Bombardier’s facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

About the INNOVIA APM 300 system: The INNOVIA APM 300 platform is Bombardier’s new generation of APM technology. It has all of the flexibility needed to meet the specific system requirements of airports and urban transit authorities as it enables numerous configurations due to many customizable features and flexible operating modes. The sleek, aerodynamic vehicles can operate in coupled trains of up to six cars providing generous passenger capacities in the lightweight and recyclable aluminium carbodies. The APM’s advanced suspension and guidance system reduces noise and vibration to achieve exceptional ride quality. The propulsion system allows the vehicles to operate at speeds up to 80 kilometer per hour. When paired with the CITYFLO 650 CBTC system an innovative communications based train control technology the INNOVIA APM 300 system can achieve shorter headways and highly efficient operations.

The INNOVIA APM 300 state of the art driverless system incorporates Bombardier’s many successful years of reliable experience in automated transit operations at some of the world’s busiest airports and cities. Bombardier has more than 40 years’ experience in designing, building, operating and maintaining APM systems with 24 systems currently in service around the world. These include London Heathrow (UK), Frankfurt/Main (Germany), Dallas/Fort Worth and San Francisco international airports (USA) and Beijing Capital International Airport (China).
