Daicel Sets up Second Air Bag Inflator Plant in America

Japan-based Daicel is planning to build a second US factory for air bag inflators in early 2016.

Reuters cited Daicel spokesman as saying that the company initially planned to construct the second US factory in March 2017, after its current mid-term business plan ended, but then it decided to start off early.

The new facility will be built near Special Devices facility in Mesa, Arizona which the company had bought 2012.

Daicel source initiators from Special Devices, which is a key component used in the production of inflators.

The move has been reportedly triggered by to the demand of automakers to find alternatives of the deadly inflators made by Takata.

Honda Motor is one of the automaker that has decided to get inflators from Daicel and Autoliv to replace the existing airbags by Takata in the recalled vehicles.

Reuters cited that Daicel initially planned to supply replacement parts from Japan, but later decided to supply the component from the upcoming US factory, because most of the recalled vehicles were in the US.
