Hong Kong Bans Poultry Imports From Some Regions Due to H5 Avian Influenza Outbreak

Hong Kong has imposed a ban on poultry imports from some regions of Japan, Israel and Nigeria due to H5 avian influenza outbreak.

The ban has been imposed on poultry, poultry products and eggs from Okayama prefecture in Japan, Haifa district in Israel and Nigeria, reports Food Navigator-Asia.com.

Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department stated in view of notifications from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the authorities from these regions on the outbreaks of H5 Avian Influenza, Hong Kong has imposed a ban on poultry.

According to CFS spokesman, over 5 000 tonnes of frozen and chilled poultry meat and 20 million poultry eggs were imported by Hong Kong between January and November.

However, no poultry meat and poultry eggs from Nigeria and Israel were imported by Hong Kong during this period.

The CFS has already informed the Nigerian, Japanese and Israeli authorities.
