US based Blue Bell Ice Cream issued a voluntary recall for two flavors of cookie dough ice cream suspected to be contaminated with listeria causing bacteria.
Produced at the ice cream company’s plant located in Sylacauga, Alabama, the products were distributed in ten US states.
Blue Bell said that it has identified a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes during its internal testing.
The ice cream maker said that the contamination was caused by the chocolate chip cookie dough ingredient supplied by Iowa based Aspen Hills.
Blue Bell has claimed that no cases of listeria have been reported relating to its products.
The company asked consumers who may have purchased the recalled products to return them to get a full refund.
The products possibly contaminated include the Blue Bell Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough with code dates 082618226, 081518242 and 082418242 along with Blue Bell Cookie Two Step having code dates of 080418222 and 081818224. The code dates can be seen on the reverse of the bottle cap.
The products were distributed in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.
Listeria’s symptoms include high fever, severe headache, nausea, stiffness, abdominal pain and diarrhea. They commonly affect people with weakened immunity system, young children and elderly people.
The bacterial infection can be dangerous to pregnant women as it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
Earlier this week, Kellogg’s had recalled about 10,000 cases of its Eggo whole wheat waffles owing to the some contamination problem.
