American meat processor Tyson Foods is planning to invest around $110m in the expansion of its poultry plant in Vienna, Georgia.
This investment is expected to create 500 jobs in the region.
Commenting on the expansion, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal said: "Tyson Foods' decision to expand in Georgia underscores how our No. 1 business climate and highly skilled workforce keeps leading companies competitive in today's fast-paced market.
"Tyson Foods is one of our state's largest employers in food processing, and I'm confident that it will continue to benefit from our top talent and robust industry network in order to deliver high-quality jobs to Georgia's citizens."
Work under the expansion includes the upgradation of parts of the plant and addition of about 100,000ft2 of space, as well as installation of new equipment and production lines.
The company will also employ new processes and technology designed to benefit food safety, quality and workplace safety.
The project began in mid-January and is scheduled to be completed in mid-2015.
The Vienna plant, which has been producing chicken for foodservice customers, including restaurant chains, will now supply fresh tray pack chicken to cater to the needs of regional retail customers.
Tyson Foods president Noel White said: "The existing infrastructure, location and the availability of workers make the Vienna plant ideal for this expansion project.
"This project will improve the plant's product mix and make it even more cost competitive."
