German automobile major BMW has geared up to launch Dynamic Parking Prediction app to help drivers find vacant space for on-street parking.
With a view to consolidating its position on the domain of connectivity between cars, the new system is the latest addition to BMW ConnectedDrive.
Riding high on research, the system introduced by the BMW would be beneficial for drivers in cities.
BMW Group head of traffic technology and traffic management Martin Hauschild said: "There is a clear demand from customers living in large cities for a system capable of predicting on-street parking availability.
"Through its collaboration with INRIX, the BMW Group aims to continue setting the benchmark in urban mobility into the future. We are starting from an excellent baseline, since most of our vehicles are already equipped with connected technology ex factory."
The BMW will demonstrate a research prototype of this application in its BMW i3 at TU-Automotive Detroit, erstwhile Telematics Detroit, a connected car fair slated between June 3 and 4.
As part of the connected cars technology, BMW offers Connected Navigation system wherein Real-Time Traffic Information system (RTTI) aid drivers by providing inputs on snarl-ups and alternative routes.
With the new research initiative, the availability of parking space can be predicted after analyzing the traffic movement data, leading to a reduction in parking traffic.
Since 2011, the BMW Group has been finding out ways to predict vacant spaces for parking. In that direction, it has produced digital maps and conducted tests on anonymous movement data.
The information was categorized under those who were leaving and the drivers looking for parking spaces. Finally, the feedback was presented on a dashboard display.
