HERE, Mitsubishi Electric Partner to Offer Advanced Location Services for Autonomous Cars

HERE Technologies and Mitsubishi Electric have unveiled plans to link their technologies for autonomous vehicles into an integrated offering for automakers.

Under the preliminary deal, the companies intend to provide services to support cars with ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) on the road today right through to the fully autonomous vehicles of the future.

The companies will initially focus on providing smart lane-level guidance to vehicles based on real-time information on traffic conditions and incidents.

This will specifically involve the detection and data systems that help a car to navigate intelligently across lanes based on surroundings, other vehicles, incidents, and traffic on the road ahead. The new ADAS systems will be offered to auto manufacturers

They will also look at how to information collected by vehicle sensors of Mitsubishi Electric can be used for high-definition map updates.

To fulfill this, Here and Mitsubishi Electric plan to draw on their respective technologies including Here’s mapping infrastructure for autonomous cars, HD Live Map, Open Location Platform and Mitsubishi’s positioning technology, High-Definition Locator, for data processing, location analytics and creation of new services.

Here Technologies CEO Edzard Overbeek said: “Location technology is at the core of the digital transformation happening right now across every industry and this has been the starting point for some very productive discussions between Here Technologies and Mitsubishi Electric.

“Each company has unique capabilities to bring to the partnership to shape the digital transformation and, together, we believe we can create tremendous value for our customers. While our initial focus will be on self-driving cars, over time we see our collaboration broadening as we explore powerful new services and business models for the emerging autonomous world.”

Initially, the two companies will offer their services in North America and Europe and will eventually make them available to other regions. The companies also plan to extend their services to other industries which are not related to the automotive industry.

Mitsubishi Electric senior vice president and automotive equipment group president Isao Iguchi said: “Mitsubishi Electric is actively developing self-sensing driving technologies incorporating various peripheral-sensing technologies, and network-based driving technologies incorporating satellite system and high accuracy 3D mapping.

“We believe that our partnership with HERE Technologies will strengthen our global rollout of network-based technologies for extra-autonomous driving.”
