UK-based Premier Foods plans to shut down its Glasgow flour mill by the end of the first quarter of 2013,in response to low milling volumes.
The closure of the facility is expected to lead to a loss of 15 jobs. This decision comes after the company reviewed its milling capacity requirements.
Premier Foods group supply chain director and bread managing director Bob Spooner said that considering the excess capacity in the company's existing milling network,it is crucial to take necessary steps to build a sustainable milling business.
The company expects the closure to strengthen its milling business and build value in the bread division.Glasgow facility is the company's smallest, supplying flour to its Hovis bakery in Duke Street,Glasgow.
Following the closure, the company plans to relocate some of the employees to its Duke Street Bakery,a distribution depot in North Lanarkshire, and bakery ingredients arm Fleming Howden in Edinburgh.
The move follows the company's announcement in November 2012 that it planned to close two bakeries and four distribution centers with a loss of 900 jobs from the bread division.
