Toyota Looks to Sell 30, 000 Fuel Cell Vehicles by 2020

Just a day after Toyota released the new Prius with hybrid components the Japanese automaker said that it is planning sell 30,000 fuel cell vehicles by 2020.

The Japanese automaker also added that by 2050, most of the vehicles it plans to sell will be gas-electric hybrids, plug-in hybrids, fuel-cell cars and electric vehicles. Toyota is betting on hydrogen and renewable energy to slash emissions generated from new vehicles and its production processes.

The automaker is planning to cut emissions generated by production to half by 2020 that what was measured in 2001, and roughly one-third by 2030.

When compared to Toyota's 2010 global average, emissions from the new vehicles will be reduced by 22%.

The company is aiming to cut emissions from new vehicles to 90% by 2050, and eliminate them altogether at its factories.

Presently, Toyota's gasoline and diesel engine powered cars accounting for roughly 85% of its global vehicle sales, which would be reduced to zero in order to achieve the emission target.

The newly released Prius has been redesigned to improve fuel efficiency and it is 20% than the current model. The car is expected to hit dealerships next year.

Toyota's revelation has come at a time when Volkswagen is facing one of the worst emission scandals, as it is accused of using software in some of its diesel cars that allegedly defrauds regulators measuring toxic emission norms.

The company also recently announced that it is planning to cut investment by €1bn a year in order to reduce the burden of the $18bn penalty it could face.

Volkswagen also said that it is now focusing on efficiency and technology, and will be fitting its cars in Europe and North America, with only diesel drives with SCR and AdBlue technology, which is used to reduce NOx emission.
