GM to Continue Output at Canadian Unit Till 2017

US automotive giant General Motors will carry on with its operations at Oshawa, Ontario, assembly line till 2017 in Canada.

The carmaker had said it would pump in $9.1m to raise Chevrolet Equinox output and make related changes at the separate CAMI Assembly, in an extension of production on its consolidated line to 2017.

The announcement comes as an extension of the lifeline of a unit plagued with repeated closure during the past decade, a report by Reuters said.

GM Canada president Steve Carlisle said: "This new investment represents a very effective way for us to meet strong demand for the Chevrolet Equinox and it's positive news for our community."

The Oshawa Assembly plant currently makes the Chevrolet Equinox and previous generation Chevrolet Impala on its 'consolidated line', along with the Buick Regal, the Chevrolet Impala, the Chevrolet Camaro and the Cadillac XTS on its 'Flex Line'.

GM has also announced that the Chevrolet Camaro will cease output in Oshawa in November and the automaker expects to manage that change without layoffs, thanks to incentivized retirement programs.

GM has so far injected around $607m in its Oshawa and St. Catharines operations during the past three years. The firm had recently declared the same amount for investment in its CAMI operation in Ingersoll, Ontario.
