Buick, a luxury brand of US carmaker General Motors (GM), has announced its plans to standardize the rearview camera for the 2015 Buick model vehicles
The move follows a study conducted by the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute in 2013 that revealed that vehicles with rear backup cameras have a significantly reduced rate of backing crashes.
According to the study, Ninety-seven percent of the backing crashes involved striking another vehicle, which corresponds with US crash data analyses.
Buick and GMC US vice president Duncan Aldred said: "The current Buick lineup holds many safety accolades, but we are always pushing to be at the forefront with our vehicles being among the safest available."
The technology will be offered with other active safety technologies such as Forward Collision Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
Additionally, the entire Buick vehicle range will be equipped with OnStar Automatic Crash Response as well as a trained Emergency Advisor connected to the vehicle.
