Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo has unveiled its Dynamic Steering for trucks that reduces the effort applied to steer the vehicle with electric motor fitted to the steering gear.
The electric motor that generates 25nm of torque is controlled by an electronic control unit and works together with the truck's hydraulic power steering.
Volvo Dynamic Steering project manager Gustav Neander said that the task of the electric motor is to deliver perfect steering feel at the time of operation.
"Almost four out of ten truck drivers complain every week of pain in the back, neck, shoulders or arms," Neander added.
"Our improved steering system offers a more relaxed driving experience that should counteract this kind of problem in the working environment."
The company claims that steering technology allows the steering to centre automatically when reversing, compensate with constant minor adjustments of the steering wheel and eliminates small steering wheel movements that are unavoidable.
