German automobile manufacturer Opel has unveiled a three-cylinder 1.0L turbo gasoline engine prior to its global debut at the upcoming Frankfurt International Motor Show to be held during September 2013.
The new 12-valve 1.0 Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) Turbo engine will be mated to a new six-speed transmission and deliver an output of 115hp and a torque of 166Nm between 1,800 to 4,700rpm.
Claimed to offer more torque all over its operating range than similar engines, the new unit will deliver 20% more fuel efficiency compared to the German carmaker's existing 1.6L power unit.
Features of the new powertrain unit include direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, and a lightweight aluminium cylinderblock.
The German carmaker is also planning to use the new gearbox in its other range of small and sub-compact models that are powered by engines rated at up to 220Nm torque.
Opel is planning to launch the latest engine in its Adam small segment car in 2014.
