FrieslandCampina Cheese is planning to cease operations at its Den Hollander Food cheese packaging plant in Lochem, Netherlands, a move that will impact 139 jobs.

This is in line with the company's strategy to cut costs to improve its competitive position in the growing European market for sliced and prepacked cheese.

Upon closing the plant in the first quarter of 2016, the cheese packaging operations from the Lochem plant will be transferred to other plants in Wolvega and Leerdam.

The Wolvega and Leerdam plants will see an investment of around €19m to install new packaging lines and accommodate the relocation of packaging lines from Lochem.

These plants will also be equipped to handle a wide variety of cheese packaging formats for both the European and the international markets in future.

Around nine additional jobs will be created at Wolvega and Leerdam plants.
